Cool Roof

A cool roof saves you money on utility costs. Choosing a roof coating for energy efficiency then saves you even more money: you don’t have to pay for tearing off your old roof; and the cost of a coating system can be half of the price of a replacement roof. Our roof coating systems, also called “green” roofing, are actually white. The color reflects 80-85% of the heat of the sun off of the surface of your building. This drives down the cost of interior air conditioning. Get in on the “hottest” trend in the roofing industry – roof coatings that make your roof dramatically cooler.

Energy saving roofing is proven to perform. Studies show that it lowers roof temperatures by up to 40 percent and decreases the amount of heat transferred into a building interior. That helps reduce cooling costs – up to 40 percent in some studies. The cool roof options we offer have earned the EPA Star. ENERGY STAR® is the Environmental Protection Agency symbol for energy saving building products. In fact, the Conklin Company is proud to be an ENERGY STAR Products Partner with its white roof systems.

Here’s an example of how much cooler your roof can be.

Temperature readings were taken on a conventional black roof, when the outdoor temperature reached 92°. The surface temperature was 123°. Black surfaces in the sun can become up to 90° hotter than the most reflective white surfaces. After a white reflective cool roof coating was applied, at 92° the surface temperature was only 71°. That’s heat not passing through to the interior. That’s why you save cooling costs and also save wear and tear on your air conditioning system, so HVAC lasts longer.

Here is a real-world example of the energy efficiency:

A leaky, built-up roof on a 100,000 square foot factory was replaced with a single-ply roofing system. It reflected 85% of the sun energy. The plant manager reports that the membrane reduced cooling bills, and that the difference was so noticeable that employees commented about how much cooler it was in the building and how much more comfortable it became to work. The firm also had no more problems with chronic leaks. The plant manager was so satisfied he recommended a system to the local vocational school.

In commercial, retail, government buildings and schools or churches, you can increase the comfort of anyone indoors even during the hottest summer months. There is a cool roof for virtually any kind of existing roof:

  • Metal
  • Built-up
  • Asphalt (rolled or shingle)
  • EPDM (rubber)
  • Hot tar and gravel
  • Flat roofs
  • Low slope roofs

By reducing the need for air-conditioning and extending the life of the cooling equipment, typical cooling energy savings of 10-30% are common. You have decreased maintenance costs – a cool roof is designed to last longer than the average material. Many local building codes are including green roofing requirements. .

Your cool roof has the best return on investment of any improvement you can make to your building
